Audi has finally launched the much-talked about A3 in India at Rs 22.95 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi). The A3 is Audi's cheapest and most compact offering till date.

Based on the Volkswagen’s (parent brand) popular MQB platform, the over-all design of the A3 is very much similar to what we've already seen on its elder siblings of the 'A' family. It measures 4456mm in length, 1796mm in width and has a wheel base of 2637mm. Having a kerb weight of 1270 kilograms, the baby saloon boasts a boot space of good 425-litres.

With the A3, Audi has also introduced a new nomenclature for the India-spec cars. Under this new trend, the cars will be badged according to their output and not according to the mill under their hood. So, instead of 2.0TDI, the car will sport the 35TDI badge, whereas the more potent 1.8 litre TFSI petrol variant would be badged as 40TFSI.

Audi offers A3 with both petrol and diesel engine options. The diesel variants come equipped with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder powertrain, rated at 143 bhp along with a peak torque of 320 Nm, enabling the sedan to cruise from 0 to 100 kmph within 8.6 seconds. While the petrol variant packs a 1.8-litre turbocharged engine, that churns out 180 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque, and sprints within 7.3 seconds. A seven-speed S-Tronic transmission will be coupled with both petrol and diesel engines.

One the inside, the A3 features brand's new dash layout with less-claustrophobic design, retro-styled air vents and 7-inch infotainment screen that pops out of the dash. The car also features a dual-zone climate control, MMI touch and MMI navigation, rear view camera, panoramic sunroof, 7 airbags and Milano leather upholstery.

The A3 comes in India via the CKD (Complete Knocked Down) route, and is assembled at the manufacturer's Aurangabad plant in Pune. Audi India commenced the local production of the A3 quite recently, and rolled the first car out of its factory.
