Cars will have stars to indicate frugality

Recent study conducted by BEE reveals that only 9-16% of the Indian cars are truly fuel efficient. The car industry is growing at a very fast pace and the car sales during last decade has surged. Apparently, the car sales have grown by three-fold in the past ten years. The trend shows a steep growth in the car sales with nothing short of 45 million cars in India by the decade end.

The concern is the overall weight of the cars is on rise, while no improvement is being seen on the fuel efficiency front. This will require an additional 25 million tonnes of oil or equivalent fuel. This in turn will lead to huge dependency on import of fuels. Hence, the paper sent strong warning signals to the car manufacturers and the consumers alike to check on their fuel consumption levels.

There are in all 330 models currently available in India. Each model is put through a test where the car is tested for its fuel efficiency. The car is judged based on its fuel consumption levels for travelling 100 km on the road. Models which consume around 7 liters of fuel for 100 km are put in the 5-star category. This means a fuel efficiency of around 14 kmpl and above fall under this category. Therefore, there are as many as 32 models in India that are considered to be the most economic cars. Next in the drop down is the 4-star category, where there are around 52 car models falling in this level. These cars show slightly lower efficiency consuming 7-9 liter of fuel for every 100 km.

In the same lines, there are 105 cars in the 3-star level and 69 cars in the 2-star zone. The cars exhibiting the lowest fuel efficiency at around 8 kmpl mileage are at the bottom level in the 1-star category. These are the cars which sip around 12 liter of fuel for every 100 km. We have enough number of cars falling in the 5-star category and some of the best-selling cars in the category are Tata Indica V2, Tata Nano, Maruti Swift, Chevrolet Beat and Toyota Etios Liva.
