General Motors is planning to launch its semi-autonomous “Driverless” vehicle by 2015 which is quite a big deal in terms of technological advancement. But is that enough for GM? Apparently not; they are also planning to launch a pure electric version of their Chevrolet Spark (known as Chevrolet Beat in India) model in South-Korea which contributes to 25% of their global sales. The car will be up for grabs by 2013.
This isn’t all; once the car has been released in South Korea, GM plans on a US launch as well. To make sure that their move towards pure electric cars goes smoothly, GM is also reported to invest %900 million per year in electric propulsion and battery technology.
The drivetrain for the electric Spark will be powered by a 270 kg Nano-phosphate lithium ion battery pack with a capacity of around 20 KWh. The motor is capable of churning out 45KW and while there is still no official mileage value, the Spark EV is expected to run up to 160km. Although GM has confirmed its plans for a launch in the States, they have been quick to point out that there is no plan as yet for an Indian launch and the territory is still being used for only testing.
