Italy based leading car maker Fiat is planning to phase-out its mid-life small car Palio from the Indian market. The Palio model, which was registering good sales volumes a few years back seems to be have lost its charm as its sales figures have been witnessing a continuous decrease since the last few months. The company now wants to fully focus on its newer cars in India including Fiat Punto (hatchback) and Fiat Linea (sedan). The Italian auto Giant is now aiming to double its sales in the Indian market to 45,000 units on the back of high demand for these two cars in the country.
With this, Fiat India has recently launched the new variant of its Fiat Grande Punto in the country which comes powered with the new generation 1.3 litre Multijet engine. The new Punto model is capable of generation a peak power of 90HP, which makes it one of the most powerful car in the segment of premium cars in India. The launch of a new variant will certainly give an upper hand to Punto over its closest competitors like Hyundai i20 and Maruti Swift.
The company is also mulling over the option of launching a new small car in the Indian market by year 2011.
Fiat India’s total sales (including exports) during June 2010 stood at 2,310 units. The company’s cumulative sales for this fiscal so far stand at 6531 vehicles as compared to 5084 units sold in the last year, accounting for a 28.5% growth in fiscal sales for the year 2010-11 over the same period in the last fiscal year. Besides Palio, the company currently offers Fiat Linea, Fiat Grande Punto and Fiat 500 in the Indian market.
