The Indian unit of South Korean car maker Hyundai Motors is all set to launch its much awaited SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) Hyundai Santa Fe in the Indian market. The new Santa Fe is scheduled to be launched in the festive season in October so that it can mark its debut with a strong opening in the Indian market. The new SUV is expected to carry a price tag of Rs 22 to 24 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and will compete with some of the most popular cars of this price segment in the Indian market including Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Honda CR-V, Nissan X Trail, Mitsubishi Outlander and Chevrolet Captiva.
According to Mr Arvind Saxena, director, (marketing & sales), Hyundai Motor India, the company will launch Sante Fe in October-November, ahead of the festive season. He added that if volumes pick up, the company will consider assembling the vehicle here.
The new Santa Fe model will be launched in a seven seater version and will be imported to the Indian market as a completely built-up unit. It will come powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine. This is the third time when the company is planning to enter the luxury SUV segment, as before this, it had introduced its Terracan and Tuscon models in the Indian market. However, both of these models were discontinued in the Indian market after these SUV's went for a global model change. The luxury SUV segment is growing at a fast pace in the whole luxury car industry at about 18 to 20 percent with popular cars of this segment like Toyota Fortuner enjoying a very high demand in the Indian market. By launching the all new Santa Fe in the Indian market, the company now wants to capitalize on the vast potential that exists here for this segment of cars.
At present, Hyundai India has as many as five vehicles in its portfolio in the country that comprises of volume driving hatches like Santro Xing, Hyundai i10 and Hyundai i20, starting range sedan Hyundai Verna and premium sedan Hyundai Sonata.
