The addition of an AMT has undoubtedly made these hatchbacks more convenient. But what about frugality?

Is The Maruti WagonR More Frugal Than Hyundai Santro And Tata Tiago?

Sales of AMT-equipped cars are gaining healthy ground among compact hatchback buyers. So it was only natural to pick up the most popular ones and put them in a real-world mileage test. Here are the results that we came back with.

For the first time ever, a Maruti seems to be behind in the efficiency race but that’s because it has the joint-biggest engine of 1.2-litre, albeit with an extra cylinder. The Santro has a 4-cylinder unit but with capacity limited to just 1.1 litre while the Tiago’s 1.2-litre engine is a 3-cylinder unit.

The table reveals that the Tiago and Santro come quite close to achieving their official numbers while the WagonR’s seems like a tall claim. But it’s expected since the claimed figures are tested in ideal conditions.

It is the Tiago that leads in real-world numbers, trailed by the Santro and WagonR at a distance. If you have an equal commute in the city and on highways, it will be the Tiago that covers the most ground on a litre of fuel. The Tiago would be followed by the Santro while the WagonR would bring up the rear.  Is The Maruti WagonR More Frugal Than Hyundai Santro And Tata Tiago?

If you travel more on the highway and less in the city, it will be the Tiago that breaches the 20kmpl mark. The other two hatchbacks will only yield around 16 to 17kmpl of mileage for you.

But since you’ve bought an AMT, we’re assuming that you’ve bought it mostly for use inside the city. Even if that’s the case, the Tiago AMT delivers around 17kmpl whereas the Santro and WagonR stay at the 15kmpl and 13kmpl mark respectively.

These figures are just indicative and bound to change depending on the road and car conditions along with the vehicle’s health. Do you own any of these cars? If yes, do share your findings with us and fellow owners in the comments section.
