JLR eyes increased assembly of cars in India

Tata Motors British subsidiaries, Jaguar and Land Rover have their ambitions fixed at attaining 20% of the luxury car market share in India in near future. Commenting on their ambitious growth plans, Rohit Suri, the India head of Jaguar Land Rover had said that they are considering the options of setting up assembly plants for the Jaguar models in India to increase their assembled car numbers.

A dedicated assembly plant in India is their only hope to reach their high-end plans of achieving their target. Jaguar Land Rover, as of now, has an insignificant luxury market presence in the country, which is majestically ruled by BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi in the same order. Land Rovers’ Freelander 2 is the only SUV assembled in India at the company’s Pimpri plant near Pune. However, Suri had been a little sceptical if they might continue assembling the Jaguar products in the same plant or will have other plants opened for the same.

Now, what remains to be seen is the time frame, as to how long the project is expected to take the form of reality. Nevertheless, one thing is for sure, that the luxury car market is on an upward growth trend, which is expected to reach 150,000 luxury car sales a year by 2020. Moreover, the segment is hoping to witness an additional 20,000 luxury unit sales from the past.
