Although it shares its engines with the Venue, the new i20’s 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine won’t be offered with the 6-speed MT seen on the former

Update (05/11/2020):Hyundai has launched the third-gen i20 with prices beginning from Rs 6.79 lakh (ex-showroom). Read more about it here.

    • The third-gen i20 will be sold in four variants: Magna, Sportz, Asta and Asta (O).

    • 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine will be offered on all variants except the base-spec Magna.

    • It will get only two gearbox options: 6-speed iMT (clutchless manual) and 7-speed DCT. The Venue also gets a proper manual transmission along with these.

    • The new i20 will be the only hatchback in the segment to get a 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch automatic) option.

    • VW Polo is the only premium hatchback to get a turbo-petrol engine currently.

Hyundai has commenced bookings for the third-gen i20 that will be launched on November 5. Ahead of its price reveal, the carmaker also revealed the variant-wise engine options of the new i20. While the carmaker will offer a conventional manual gearbox on the 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, the turbo-petrol unit will miss out on a proper MT option.

The new i20 will come with the same engines as the Venue: 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol (83PS/114Nm), 1.0-litre turbo-petrol (120PS/172Nm), and 1.5-litre diesel (100PS/240Nm). The engine-gearbox combos are as follows:

    • 1.2-litre petrol- 5-speed MT or CVT

    • 1.0-litre turbo-petrol- 6-speed iMT (clutchless manual) or 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission)

    • 1.5-litre diesel- 6-speed MT

Hyundai offers the Venue’s 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with three transmissions: 6-speed MT, 6-speed iMT and 7-speed DCT. For reference, the difference between the 6-speed manual and 6-speed iMT options of a Venue’s variant is up to Rs 24,000. So if Hyundai were to launch the i20 Turbo with a proper manual it would have retailed at a relatively cheaper price tag.

Among its rivals, it is only the VW Polo that is currently being offered with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine (105PS/175Nm). It is offered with a 6-speed MT as well as a 6-speed AT. The Tata Altroz is also set to get a turbo-petrol engine that will be offered in four variants, albeit only with a manual gearbox. Apart from these two, the new i20 will also lock horns with the Maruti Suzuki Baleno/Toyota Glanza and Honda Jazz. It is expected to be priced from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.

    All prices, ex-showroom
