French automaker, Renault is planning to bring in two low-cost vehicles for emerging markets like India, out of which one will be a Tata Nano rival, French news web portal Latribune.fr reports. Both the models will be developed together in association with Renault's strategic partner Nissan and will cost around Rs 5,000 euros and 2,500 euros respectively. The company is expecting to launch these vehicles by the end of 2014.
As per the word on the street, the company is planning to build both these cars at its Chennai based facility, so we can expect the prices to be truly competitive here in India. However, the company hasn't shared any plans about it, but has agreed to the fact that the company is working on such a project. Renualt's chief operating officer Carlos Tavares said, “When the project has been officially decided… we will make an announcement,”
These two low-cost cars were earlier requested by Renault and Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn, who said that the group need even cheaper models than the company's current Dacia range for the emerging-markets. And like CarDekho have earlier reported that the French auto major has also started developing a 800cc small car codenamed as “A Entry”, which will compete with the likes of segment toppers Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon. The development work has been started under Renault's Low-cost car specialist, Gerard Detourbet.
Stay tuned to CarDekho for more updates on the same. Cheers!
