Tata is developing a more powerful variant of the Safari Storme SUV. The car will feature a tweaked VariCOR 400 powerplant, which will be capable of producing 156PS @4000 rpm. Preceding its launch, images detailing technical specifications of the unit have been leaked online. One of the most prominent development in the upcoming model will be the incorporation of a new 6-speed manual transmission. The torque output has also been enhanced to improve the overall grunt of the SUV and now produces 400 Nm @1,750-2,500 rpm.
The VariCOR 400 powerplant incorporated in the new Safari Storme is a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. The same unit can be seen in the current Safari Storme but with a comparatively inferior power output.
The re-tuned VariCOR 400 unit will only be available in the top-of-the-range ‘VX’ variant. The mid and lower-end model Safari Stormes will continue featuring the current 150 PS engine and will come with the current 5-speed manual transmission. The re-tuned VariCOR 400 ‘VX’ variant Tata Safari Storme will be capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 kmph in under 12.8 seconds, as compared to the standard VariCOR variants that clock an acceleration time of 0 to 100 kmph in 13.8 seconds. The upgraded Safari Storme will also incorporate the much more durable and lighter self-adjusting clutch that was introduced in the Safari Storme facelift in June, this year.
