Mr. Sandeep Singh, the deputy managing director, marketing of Toyota Kirloskar Motors has been reported saying that the company has no plans of bringing the Avanza MPV to Indian shores. Toyota Avanza is a 5/7-seater MPV that is positioned below Innova in the South Asian markets like Bangkok, Indonesia and home-land market of Japan.

Earlier, Toyota had mentioned that the company could develop an MPV based on the Etios platform. Since Avanza MPV is not being launched in India the probability of Etios based MPV is high; however, no official announcement has been made regarding the same. Mr. Singh has also denied the development of a small car below the Etios/Liva twins which leaves Toyota Etios as the entry level sedan and Liva as the entry level hatchback in the Toyota India’s line-up.

The information from Mr. Singh is in accordance with the recent assertions made by global Chairman of this Japanese auto giant, Akio Toyoda. Mr. Toyoda mentioned that Toyota Motors is going to focus on high quality of its products and innovation that it is known for rather than entering the low-cost market with more entry-level cars. The company would neither enter the sub 4-lakh segment nor would bring out any sub brand focusing on low-cost cars like its rivals Nissan and Volkswagen. Nissan is soon bringing its Datsun brand to India and Volkswagen is yet to announce the name of its brand.
