We reported in November, 2017 that Toyota might launch a small electric car in India after it signed an MoU with the Andhra Pradesh government to provide vehicles for the Amravathi smart city project. Now, Toyota has confirmed in an official statement that it plans to launch electric vehicles in India and other markets like China, Japan, and the USA, and Europe.

It is, however, specified that Toyota will first introduce its electric vehicles in China, which is the biggest EV market in the world. Toyota intends to have more than 10 electric vehicles in its global portfolio by the early 2020s. In India too, the delivery of Toyota’s electric vehicles for Andhra Pradesh government’s smart city project should begin in the early part of the next decade. The introduction of Toyota EVs in the early part of the next decade appears to be in perfect harmony with the carmaker’s plan of delivering its EVs to the AP government.

What is even more interesting is the fact that Toyota might be building its first electric car for India at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility. Both the carmakers recently joined hands to develop electric vehicles for the Indian market. In a press release shared in November 2017 to announce the partnership, both the carmakers had stated that they will launch EVs from 2020 onwards, which is, again, in sync with Toyota’s announcement.

In order to expedite EV development, Toyota has come up with JVs and partnerships with different carmakers and component makers globally. The carmaker is showing urgency as it doesn’t have a single electric vehicle in its portfolio while big markets like China and India are pushing for the environment-friendly mobility in a big way.
