Volkswagen Group sold 4.11 million vehicles in January-May 2014

World’s leading automaker, the Volkswagen Group delivered 4.11 million vehicles from January to May this year, registering a good 6.3 percent growth. While particularly in the month of May, the group handed over 8,64,600 units to the customers, up by 5.9 percent.

"The Volkswagen Group brands delivered over 4m vehicles for the first time in the period to May. That is an encouraging development, particularly in view of the mixed performance on world markets", group board member for sales Christian Klingler said. "Even though our Group and its brands are in an excellent position to respond to the different trends in the world regions, market demands still remain challenging," he added.

In the European market, the VW group sold 1.64 million units from January to May, up by 7.6 percent as compared to last year's 1.53 million units. In the domestic (Germany) market, 5,02,200 vehicles made its way to the roads, resulting into 6.1 percent growth. While 7.9 percent more- 2,74,000 vehicles in Central & Eastern Europe, and 5.8 percent more- 1,13,800 units rolled out of dealerships. Contrary to the whole European scenario of growth, VW showed negative numbers in the U.S. In north region, the group sold from January to May, of which were handed over in the US. Registering an over-all decline of 2.7 percent, the group sold 3,50,400 units, in January to March tenure. In North America, sales went down by 4.6 percent at 2,37,900, whereas with a massive 21.1 percent and 16.9 percent decline in demand was registered in the south region and Brazil respectively.

From individual brand prospective, Volkswagen itself performed well with 4.4 percent jump at 2.55 million vehicles, courtesy a hefty 17 percent rise of sales in Asia-Pacific region. The brand with four rings- Audi delivered 11.5 more cars at 7,13,900 units as compared to 6,40,200 units last year, again thanks to Asia-Pacific region for showing 18.4 percent growth. Sales of the performance carmaker- Porsche went up by 6.3 percent at 71,500 cars. While the Czech-originated Skoda delivered a total of 4,28,000 units, up by 13.5 percent from January to May 2014. Even the group's budget brand- SEAT witnessed an upgraph of 8.9 percent at 1,62,500 units delivered in the same tenure.
