The German behemoth's all-new EV range will be largely targeted towards established EV giant Tesla’s line-up.
In the wake of one of the biggest auto scandals of all time – the VW diesel emission scandal – Volkswagen is moving ahead with a single motto: to revive its image. Now, probably to do that, the company is marching towards zero-emission mobility (though one might argue that almost every manufacturer on the planet wants to electrify its portfolio as early as possible). As reported by a German publication, Volkswagen will showcase the first vehicle from its upcoming all-electric lineup at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.
Reportedly, the new EV will have the external dimensions similar to that of the Golf – a hatchback that sits above the Polo in VW’s global line-up – but will be as spacious as the India-bound Passat sedan. The vehicle will be presented in near-production form and is likely to hit the global markets in 2018. Volkswagen’s ambition is that the new EV will have a range of 400-600km (300 miles) and that one will be able to charge it up entirely in just 15 minutes.
A few days ago, Tesla introduced its flagship sedan – the Model S – with a range of over 300 miles. It also happens to be the world’s quickest-accelerating production car. Like Volkswagen, all leading manufacturers are planning to challenge Tesla and It’s not exactly a revolutionary move by Volkswagen since Tesla has already crossed that milestone. We’ll have to wait and see what the company has in store for us in terms of zero-emission mobility. Stay tuned.
