In MG’s latest offering, raw power and sophisticated style come together to create an experience that stands peerless in India’s full-size SUV segment.
What happens when unmatched power and classy style come together? You’d be forgiven for thinking that rhetorical question was the curtain-raiser to a superhero or spy movie. However, the result of this coming together is even more exciting than either, especially if you are looking to buy a full-size SUV in India.
That’s because the MG Gloster is easily the most striking-looking SUV to hit Indian roads in a long time, boasts of impressive off-road and on-road driving aids, and sits top of its class when it comes to technology and luxury. If you are on the lookout for an SUV to do it all, here’s how the MG Gloster’s power plus style formula fits that bill perfectly.
Large Dimension, Slick Design
Make no mistake, the Gloster stands peerless when it comes to road presence. It can also comfortably overshadow other cars in your parking lot with its sheer size. MG has achieved this by making the Gloster 4,985mm long and 1,867 tall, both best-in-class figures.
But what’s commendable is the way MG has made the size so appealing. After all, the Gloster flirts with the 5-metre mark, a figure even most luxury sedans avoid. The appeal is evident the moment you look at the Gloster’s fascia, which is dominated by the huge chrome octagonal grille.
MG has also deftly used chrome in other areas to add just the right amount of bling to the Gloster’s otherwise very purposeful design. This includes the front skid plate, lamp housings, side step, window line, roof rails, door handles, ORVMs, tailgate strip, and exhaust tips.
It’s this mix and match of simple design with eye-catching touches that differentiate the Gloster. For instance, the SUV gets the largest wheels in its class, at 19 inches, which are shod with fat rubber to make your ride supple. At the same time, MG has masked that size with an elegant diamond-cut multi-spoke wheel design.
You find similar design flourishes at the front in the form of the hood’s muscular design creases, the character lines on the side body, and the compact rear which houses the emblazoned Gloster name and twin dual-barrel exhaust cans.
Best-In-Class Interior
In the lap of luxury - that’s how the Gloster’s cabin makes you feel as you step inside. While credit for its impressive space goes to the SUV’s class-leading dimensions, the panoramic sunroof also plays its part by letting in loads of natural light.
The large dimensions, along with the best-in-class wheelbase, offer comfortable seating space for seven adults. Of course, you can take this comfort to the next level by opting for captain seats instead of the bench seat in the Gloster’s second row. In either case, you can slide and recline the second-row seats for added comfort on longer journeys.
Furthermore, the third row can also be reclined and when you need some extra boot space, folded flat into a 60:40 split. Speaking of the boot, the Gloster comes with MG’s hands-free tailgate opening feature that makes accessing the Gloster’s boot a piece of cake.
If the large sunroof, airy cabin, and rich leather-finished adjustable seats form the analogue part of the Gloster’s cabin design, its digital bits leave you and the competition gobsmacked. Let’s start with the Gloster’s driver seat which gets 12-way electronic adjustability with inbuilt memory, massage, ventilation, and heating. The co-driver’s seat is no slouch either with 8-way electronic adjustability and heating.
The Gloster further gets a 3-zone climate control system with dedicated AC vents for the second and third rows, 64-colour ambient lighting, a PM 2.5 filter to keep pollutants out of the cabin, wireless phone charging pad, three USB charging ports and four 12v ports, six cup holders and four bottle holders, and even a cubby to tuck your sunglasses in. These creature comforts ensure that spending a long time inside the Gloster, whether unintentionally due to traffic or intentionally during long drives, is comfortable and entertaining for each occupant.
Most Powerful In Its Class
Moving all that bulk requires strong engines and underpinnings, which is why MG offers the Gloster with two diesel engine options. While both engines are BS6 compliant and boast of the same 2.0-litre displacement, the difference lies in the number of turbochargers they employ.
The single-turbo engine produces 163PS of power and 375Nm of torque while the twin-turbo variant churns out a segment-topping 218PS of power and a massive 480Nm of twisting force. While the former is available with only the 2WD Gloster variant, the twin-turbo engine is offered with the 4WD Gloster.
Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with MG throwing in a set of paddle shifters to make driving the Gloster an effortless affair.
Is Your Garage Ready for the MG Gloster?
The MG Gloster is as comfortable playing the smashing superhero as it is playing the chic spy that goes about its business in a clinical and fuss-free manner. This makes it stand apart from competitors that are good at a few things but passable at most.
