Audi has revealed the extended (long-wheelbase) version of the A4 at the on-going Beijing Motor Show. It is based on the new generation of the saloon, which was showcased at the Indian Auto Expo in February this year.

Unsurprisingly, the A4L isn't the only long-wheelbase vehicle to debut at the Chinese motor show. Manufacturers such as Jaguar, Mercedes and BMW showcased stretched versions of the XF sedan, the E-Class and X1 crossover respectively. The Chinese market is known to like big cars, and many manufacturers have developed long wheelbase versions of their vehicles specifically for it.

The overall length of the car has gone up by 17 centimetres compared to the standard A4. The legroom and knee room are obviously better, thanks to the extra length. The unladen weight of the long-wheelbase version has been dropped significantly (by as much as 110 kg) compared to its predecessor. The A4 L gets goodies such as Audi's Matrix LED headlight technology, dynamic turn indicators, a virtual instrument cluster and a host of safety tech in the form of Autonomous Emergency Braking, pedestrian detection, parking assistance and a lot more. On the mechanical front, the A4 L gets a 2.0-litre TFSI turbo petrol motor that whips up either 190 or 252 horses, depending on the variant. Power is channelled to the front wheels, whereas Audi's Quattro tech is optional.

We expect the standard Audi A4 to go on sale in India later this year. As of now, it is unclear whether the German auto giant will launch the extended wheelbase version in India or not — chances do seem slim. However, Audi is evaluating the Q2 L for the Indian market, which might be the cheapest luxury car in the country!
