Chennai to become world's largest auto-manufacturing hub, Stalin

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin stated on Thursday that Chennai is on its way to become the world's largest automobile manufacturing center with the onset of production facilities by Mahindra and Mahindra along with an Indonesian group. The total capacity will be some where around 2.2 million vehicles per annum.
Stalin who was invited at the inauguration of the Rs 2,100 crore Apollo Tyres factory in Chennai informed the reporters that the government is in talks with a global automobile major for setting up a car plant in Chennai with a capacity of 300,000 cars with an investment of Rs. 4,000 crore.
He confirmed that Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) has finalised the plan to set up a facility in Chennai at an outlay of Rs. 1,800 which is likely to produce 150,000 cars in a year.
Sundareshwarar Alloys and Steels, a part of Indonesian group Texmaco is also thinking on the lines to set up a tractor plant and a tractor component plant at Gangaikondan at an outlay of Rs.1,000 crore.
He further added that tyre manufactures like Michelin, JK Tyres, MRF, ATC and Apollo Tyres have also made major investments in Chennai. Chennai region is not just confined to the auto-manufacturing but is all set to become India's largest manufacturing center for tyres with a daily manufacturing of 1,600 metric tonnes per day.
The research centers of major car manufacturing companies like Daimler, Renault-Nissan, Visteon, M&M and Ashok Leyland are also located in Chennai.
NATRIP, the state of the art automobile testing facility is being built near Chennai at an outlay of Rs. 500 crore. With almost 80% of the civil work being done, it is likely to commissioned by September.
Stalin also informed that government is keen on drafting a sector specific policy for automobiles. Speaking about the process, Stalin specified that the policy will include many initiatives from the government. He said this will not only attract new investments but will also help in improving the existing units.
