The new Maruti Swift launched just one month back, has gained popularity in car market like forest fire. Such a bulky comment is evident from the fact that the bookings of new Maruti Swift touched a figure of about 80,000 units. Such is the charisma of this fuel-efficient hatchback that there are almost zero cancellations by customers all over the country. However, Maruti India seems to be in tight position to meet such a whopping demand because of the ongoing labour unrest going on at Maruti Manesar plant. On top of that, workers at the Suzuki Powertrain diesel engine plant also went on a flash strike for two days although the matter is resolved with them now and production is back in action at this plant.

But unavailability of diesel engines for two days left Manesar plant to temporarily stall its assembly unit and sit with folded hands. Maruti dealers are avoiding taking further bookings of the car but customers are persistent about their choice. A dealer of Maruti in Delhi said there hasn't been a single cancellation of order for the Swift despite the uncertainty. They are convincing customers to buy Maruti Ritz as an alternative but there has been no change. The company officials have instructed the dealers to stop taking further bookings as the delivery period of new Maruti Swift may extend till April 2012. Volkswagen's Polo, Nissan's Micra and recently launched Toyota's Etios Liva hatchbacks are not able to pull off the burden of sluggish sales.

According to the dealers, the customers are ready to wait for Swift no matter when it will get delivered but do not want to buy these cars. A Nissan dealer clarifies the dismal sales by saying that demand is under pressure for now, with enquiries refusing to translate into sales. He added that they were expecting to make hay with some cancelled bookings of the new Swift but that did not happen. A component supplier suggested that even if Maruti India ramps up the production of Swift and produces 15,000 Swift cars per day, it will not meet the demand graph in six months. The company is suffering from huge production and revenue losses due to the impasse. Still the value-for-money-star car Maruti Swift has proved to be a lucky goose for the company.
