Ford Introduces SYNC 3 Infotainment System

Set to replace the ‘MyFord Touch’ and will begin arriving on new models from 2015
Ford Motor company has revealed the third iteration of its voice commanded infotainment system - SYNC 3. The new SYNC 3 system is set to replace the MyFord touchscreen infotainment system. Moreover, Ford has also dropped Microsoft’s partnership which launched the SYNC back in 2007 in the first place. In India, Ford offers SYNC 1 with the Fiesta and the EcoSport and soon to be launched 2015 Figo. Moreover, we never got the SYNC 2 which indeed is known as - MyFord Touch.

Raj Nair, Ford chief technical officer and group vice president, Global Product Development, commented, “SYNC 3 is another step forward in delivering connectivity features customers most want, and they tell us this kind of technology is an important part of their decision to buy our vehicles.”
What’s the heck about the new SYNC 3?
- Ford promises the third iteration of SYNC offers smooth and less claustrophobic interface along with a brand new UI.
- The touchscreen response has been improved and offers smartphone like gesture controls - pinch-to-zoom and swipe.
- The SYNC 3 also offers over-the-air updated when connected to a Wi-Fi network.
- The home screen features three zone choices – Navigation, Audio and Phone
- Adding on the voice commands, SYNC’s USP, in the SYNC 3 - Ford has simplified the voice commands - eg, for playing a track say - “play ”.
- Searching places have also been simplified, eg, “Detroit Airport” rather than using the official name “Detroit Metropolitan Airport.”
- The SYNC 3 also offers seamless integration of Apple iphone’s Siri Eyes-Free control.
- The AppLink has also bettered, to your info - AppLink allows compatible smartphone apps to be used hands free using SYNC’s voice commands. “Overall, AppLink is faster, more responsive and easier to find your apps,” said Julius Marchwicki, Ford global product manager, AppLink.
- Like before, SYNC 3 continues to offer Emergency Assistance, which calls the emergency service in case of any casualty using your phone connected to SYNC through bluetooth.
“We considered all the modern smartphones and mobile operating systems and created something familiar but unique,” said Parrish Hanna, Ford global director of Human Machine Interface.
