While other cars from Hyundai will receive a diesel engine in the BS6 era, the Elantra is set to move ahead on petrol power only

Hyundai Elantra facelift will be launched on 29 September.
-
Currently, it uses a 2.0-litre petrol and a 1.6-litre diesel engine with 6-speed manual and torque converter available with both engines.
-
With the facelift, only the petrol 2.0-litre will remain on offer.

Elantra’s average monthly sales for the last six months stands at 79 units.
The facelifted Hyundai Elantra is primed for launch on 29 September. But it might not be available in the same powertrain setup as the outgoing Elantra.
Hyundai could be ditching the diesel engine in the upcoming Elantra at least for the time being. This move is not in line with Hyundai’s stance on the upcoming BS6 emission norms. The Korean carmaker had previously revealed that even when the stricter emission norms come into play, they will continue to offer models such as the Elite i20, Creta, Verna and Venue with a diesel engine.
Currently, the Elantra is available with a 2.0-litre petrol engine that makes 152PS of max power and 192Nm of peak torque. The diesel in the lineup is the 1.6-litre engine, similar to the one in the Creta, and makes 128PS of max power and 260Nm of peak torque. The transmission options available with both engines include a 6-speed manual and a torque converter automatic.

Hyundai had earlier expressed concerns about running BS6-compliant engines on BS4 fuel. It’s possible that the Korean carmaker might introduce a diesel engine on the Elantra if there’s demand but that will only happen post BS6-implementation.
Also, once BS6 norms come into play, Hyundai will no longer be using the 1.6-litre diesel engine currently found in the Elantra, Creta and Verna. Instead, it will be switching to the BS6-compliant 1.5-litre engine present in the Kia Seltos, which could be a little small and underpowered for the likes of the Elantra.
Of course, the Elantra is not a volume driver for Hyundai per se, with only 41 units of the sedan sold in August 2019 and 54 in July before that. If you take a look at the average monthly sales for the Elantra over the past six months, the figure stands at 79. The Elantra is one that simply plugs a gap in their India lineup, higher up in the price range. The Elantra is currently priced between Rs 13.82 lakh and Rs 20.04 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom New Delhi).
