The Korean auto majors are going to launch the new Hyundai Elantra in the Indian market. The Fluidic Hyundai Elantra had been showcased at the 2012 Auto Expo and attracted a huge mob towards it. Hyundai Elantra Launch has been speculated to be in September of 2012. The car is being tested on the roads of Chennai as per the spy shots, which are available online .
But the test runs of Elantra had started before the launch of the car in the Auto Expo and this is not the first time when the car has been taken for test runs. The new Elantra will have a 1.8-litre Nu four-cylinder petrol engine that gives an output of 148bhp and 178 Nm of torque. This new engine is meant to replace the 2.0-litre Beta engine found in the previous generations of the Elantra.
The smaller size new engine boosts up the fuel economy of the car on highways by 18 percent. There are chances that the Hyundai Elantra diesel may come with the Verna’s 1.6-litre motor engine. This Verna diesel engine is able to produce 126bhp of output at 4000 rpm and a torque of 265 Nm at 1900 rpm. Indian automobile market will be the first to have a diesel engine Elantra.
Hyundai is planning to locally assemble the new Elantra at the Chennai manufacturing unit of the company. New Elantra will be incorporated with a 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox. The starting price quoted for the new Elantra is Rs. 12 lakhs for the base model and Rs. 16 lakhs for the top end variant (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi). The new Hyundai Elantra has been designed in such a way that it fills in the gap between Fluidic Verna and Sonata. The new Elantra has been named the 2012 North American car of the year.
