The Taxi fleet industry of the country is being reckoned as a significant market. Hyundai India is planning to make most out of this opportunity by entering this space. The car will not be a brand new model, instead, it will be a new base variant of Hyundai Xcent. The new base trim is aimed at targeting Maruti Dzire Tour, which is currently dominating the cab operator segment.
Feature wise, the base trim of Xcent will not get blackened pillars, full wheel caps, front power windows, central locking and cooled glovebox. Moreover, to undercut the pricing of rivals, the car will sport different upholstery for the seats, probably a Rexine clothing.
As per the powertrain options, it will get the same 1.1 litre CRDi diesel and 1.2-litre petrol engines as currently working in the standard model. The 1.1-litre diesel engine pumps out 71bhp and offers fuel economy of 18.9kmpl and 24.4kmpl in city and highways respectively. On the other hand, the CNG-run Xcent gives 18kmpl in urban conditions and around 25kmpl on motorways. The engines will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The inclusion of the petrol/CNG trim will benefit both the company as well as the taxi operators as Dzire Tour is presently available with only diesel engine option.
Currently, the base variant of Xcent costs INR 5.0 lac for petrol and INR 5.9 lac (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the diesel model. The new base variant will replace the ongoing model and will be launched with a slightly different price tag. The cab industry of the country is growing by 15-20 percent. This has opened the eyes of car manufacturers, who are considering to shell out cars that are low in demand (base variants).
