Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that cars made in the home country will be exported to Japan. Cars will be made by Maruti Suzuki here and then will be exported to Japan for the first time.
“Maruti (Suzuki) will manufacture here... The Japanese company will manufacture here and export it to Japan,” said Mr. Modi while addressing India-Japan Business Leaders Forum. He added that both India and Japan should move ahead together, not just in the sphere of high-speed trains, but also for high-speed growth.
Maruti Suzuki chairman, R C Bhargava, told that the first car to be exported will be Baleno and the company is eyeing a figure of 20,000-30,000 units of export every year. He although elaborated that the export process would be a complicated one and the company will be able to export cars only from January 2016. Maruti Baleno was launched in the Indian market in late October and since then has achieved spectacular success.
The declaration comes at a time when India has decided to buy a bullet train from Japan for Ahmedabad-Mumbai corridor among other things. This train will be part of a bigger project on the network of bullet trains in India. Japan has extended an almost interest-free loan to India (0.1% exactly) for this project whose cost is estimated to be around Rs. 98,000 crores ($12 billion). Apart from this, the countries have signed major pacts related to civil nuclear deal and of strategic importance.
