Can the Sonet iMT deliver its promised mileage in real world driving conditions? We find out
Kia’s first sub-4m SUV for India, the Sonet, was launched in September 2020 with prices ranging between Rs 6.71 lakh and Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom). It is offered with three engines including a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit. It comes with the choice of a 6-speed iMT (clutchless manual) or a 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission). The Sonet is the second SUV to feature Hyundai-Kia’s new iMT (intelligent manual transmission) technology after the Venue. We managed to run our fuel efficiency test with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol Sonet equipped with the 6-speed iMT and here are our findings:
Engine |
1.0-litre Turbo-petrol |
Power |
120PS |
Torque |
172Nm |
Transmission |
6-speed iMT |
Claimed fuel efficiency |
18.2kmpl |
Tested fuel efficiency (city) |
12.24kmpl |
Tested fuel efficiency (highway) |
15.33kmpl |
The Sonet iMT turbo-petrol was unable to match its claimed fuel efficiency figure in the city as well as on the highway in our tests and it fell short by up to 5.96kmpl. At its best, it was 2.87kmpl short of the claimed figure. ARAI figures are based on mileage achieved in controlled and simulated test conditions which is why they are usually higher than what is usually achieved in real world conditions.

Based on the results from our mileage test from city and highway driving conditions, we’ve estimated how it would perform in mixed driving conditions:
Mileage |
City:Highway (50:50) |
City:Highway (25:75) |
City:Highway (75:25) |
13.61kmpl |
14.41kmpl |
12.88kmpl |
If the majority of your usage is restricted to the city, expect the Sonet iMT to deliver a mileage of around 13kmpl. For those who use their SUV mostly on wider stretches of roads, the fuel efficiency should go up by around 1.5kmpl. In case your commute is split equally between the city and highway, the Sonet iMT’s mileage could hover around 14kmpl.
It is important to note that fuel efficiency depends on a combination of driving conditions, the car’s condition as well as your driving style, so your experience may vary from ours. If you own a Sonet turbo-petrol iMT, feel free to share your findings with us in the comments.
