When you hear the word SUV, immediately a picture of ruff and tuff vehicle with tall body structure comes to your mind. Earlier SUV or Sports Utility Vehicle with 4x4 functionality was used only on challenging and harsh conditions, but now the scenario is changed. People living in urban areas are now opting for the SUVs mainly because of their robust nature, offroading capability and mighty road presence.
Below is the list of top 10 selling SUVs in year 2014 which is mostly governed by homegrown manufacturer Mahindra and Tata Motors.

In our #LookBack2014 its time to have a walkthrough of the Top 5 selling SUVs of 2014.
1) Mahindra Bolero
In the first eleven months, Mahindra retailed more than 92,000 units of Bolero which cemented its top position. Powered by 2.5-litre m2DiCR engine, the SUV produces a max power of 62bhp at 3200rpm and peak torque of 192NM at 1400-2200rpm. In the upcoming year, it is expected that the company will roll out the updated or facelifted version of mighty Bolero.
2) Ford EcoSport
The compact SUV from the American manufacturer captures the second position in our top 5 list. From the starting month of 2014 to November, the automaker has retailed a total of 47,703 units of EcoSport. Launched in 2013, Ford EcoSport garnered bookings of over 17,000 units in first 14 days of its launch. The compact SUV is offered in both the fuel trims. The petrol model gets 1.5-litre TiVCT engine along with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine while the diesel models are powered by 1.5-litre TDCi engine.
3) Mahindra Scorpio
The rugged SUV Scorpio received the next gen avatar in the month of September which further added the numbers to already selling Scorpio. From January to November, the automaker retailed 47,496 units of Scorpio. The SUV is offered with m2DiCr and 2.2 mHawk diesel engine along with the option of AWD in S4 and S10 variants.
4) Renault Duster
Renault with the Duster clocked a total of 36,450 units in a time period of January to November. In September, to further boost the sales, automaker introduced the AWD version which is only available with 110PS trim. The SUV houses 1.5-litre diesel mill, which churns out 110bhp of max. power and 248Nm of peak torque. The powertrain is coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. Renault claims a fuel efficiency of 19.72kmpl from this new entrant in the line-up.
5) Mahindra XUV500
With a total of 32,582 units sold between January to November, Mahindra XUV500 grabs the 5th position in our list. Powered by 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, the SUV produces a max power of 140bhp at 3750rpm and peak torque of 330Nm at 1600-2800rpm. The engine is mated to 6 speed synchromesh manual transmission.
In the year 2015, we expect Mahindra will bring the next gen model of Bolero along with Tata Motors which will update its Safari lineup.
