The strong hybrid claims to deliver 27.97kmpl and the mild hybrid 20.58kmpl. We put them through our extensive city and highway testing to get you the real world figures
The latest compact SUV in the town, the Maruti Grand Vitara, has some important highlights. It offers an all-wheel drivetrain and a strong-hybrid powertrain, both which are new to this segment. It retails from Rs 10.45 lakh to Rs 19.65 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
With the strong-hybrid, the Grand Vitara becomes the most fuel efficient car in India. So, let’s see how frugal both the hybrids are in real world driving conditions and if their difference is huge.

Inside the city and at low speeds, the strong hybrid delivers almost double the fuel efficiency of the mild hybrid. The strong-hybrid uses the electric motor while driving at lower RPM, which makes it a lot more efficient and close to the claimed figure. Inside the City, the strong hybrid can remain on pure electric juice for long periods of time. And by using a lot of brake energy recuperation, it charges the batteries simultaneously.

As it moves to the highway, the speed increases and the petrol engine starts doing its duty, which drops the fuel efficiency a little. The mild hybrid engine lacks the ability to accelerate quickly, so you often end up using more throttle to get the pace up swiftly. For that, the engine holds on to higher RPMs and makes it feel a bit stressed. While it remains relaxed on the highways, overtakes will require some planning. That’s why there’s a huge gap between the city fuel efficiency figures of the Grand Vitara mild hybrid and strong hybrid, but considerably lower gap between their highway figures.

With equal amounts of city and highway drives, the strong hybrid should deliver around 23.5kmpl, while the mild hybrid clocks around 16kmpl.
-
With the majority of highway driving, the mild hybrid delivers a decent 17.36kmpl, but is still over 5kmpl less than the strong hybrid.
-
The Grand Vitara strong hybrid inches close to 25kmpl with majority of the city driving, but the gap increases by almost 10kmpl as the mild hybrid variants start dropping their efficiency.
