Maruti Manesar plant can see fresh protests

A month long impasse at the Maruti’s Manesar plant has hindered the production of Maruti’s top selling cars in India especially Maruti Swift. Despite many attempts made by the Maruti’s management and the workers including the government intervention, the situation remains as it is. The talks held on Wednesday between the Maruti Udyog Kamgar Union (MUKU) representing the Manesar plant’s workers and the Maruti Suzuki India management ended up with a very lukewarm result. A fresh round of protests from the factory workers is expected soon.

The negotiations are said to get tangled on the issue of the reinstating the 62 dismissed and suspended workers. In return of the demand placed by the company to get the good conduct bond signed by the workers, the workers requested to take back the dismissed employees. While the management agreed to take back 18 trainees apart from a few of the dismissed workers, they do not intend to change the status of around 32 dismissed employees. However, Kuldeep, the General Secretary of MUKU had reported that they are expecting some positive outcome from the negotiations. Even the representative from Maruti India’s sister concern, Suzuki Powertrain India Limited General Secretary, Rajesh Kumar had expressed similar views on the ongoing labour unrest. Nevertheless, he adds the possibility of a flash protest from the workers if the situation remains unresolved.

The production at the Maruti Suzuki India’s Manesar plant is reported to resume to normal levels in case of MSI’s flagship model Maruti Swift. The Maruti Swift production is said to reach 750 units from both plants yesterday. The production of the other models – Maruti A-star and Maruti SX4 has also begun a couple of weeks back. Maruti India is also offering Maruti Grande Vitara, Maruti Estillo, Maruti Swift Dzire, Maruti Gypsy and Maruti Omni. The part production at Manesar Plant B is now expected to extend to second shift production shortly. The production at the Manesar plant has reached to almost normal levels by employing experienced and well-trained workers. The total strength of employees is 1500 at the Manesar factory now.
