The premium hatchback segment of cars in India is on an expansion spree. This market has witnessed entry of all new Swift from Maruti India. Maruti Suzuki has plans to expand further more in India considering that by 2015 car market in India will go up to a capacity of 4.5 million units. The company has plans to upgrade and expand its manufacturing capacity so as to meet the increasing demand and be able to produce as many as two million units annually. The company is eyeing Gujarat as one of the most preferred sites for setting up its new manufacturing plants as hinted by Maruti India’s Managing Director Shinzo Nakanishi and Chairman R C Bhargava although sites in Tamil Nadu and Haryana are also under consideration. Gujarat is also housing Tata Nano manufacturing plant and seems to be a conducive place for the purpose. The meetings and talks are ongoing with Gujarat CM Narendra Modi since May of this year. Maruti India already has its manufacturing set ups in Haryana (3 of them in Gurgaon and 1 in Manesar).

Coming back to new Maruti Swift, it must be known that the demand of this car has gone up especially for its diesel variant priced at 5.29 lakhs. As contrary to the predictions, the demand for this variant is 80% and demand of its petrol variant priced at just Rs.4.43 lakhs is only 20%. Clearly, the new Swift price is quite moderate. Hyundai's i20, Toyota's Liva, Ford's Figo, General Motors' U-VA and Beat are the other lucrative options in the same price segment.
