Maruti strike stretches waiting period of Maruti’s diesel cars

The 13-day strike and production halt at Maruti’s Manesar plant has played a spoilsport for those aspiring to own Maruti Swift, Maruti A-star, Maruti SX4 or Maruti Swift Dzire as it has stretched the waiting period for these Maruti cars. As a consequence many buyers have been told to wait for as long as two months. The Manesar plant that witnessed the strike rolls out 1,200 units on a daily basis in two shifts. In addition to the a production loss of over 13,200 cars Maruti India has suffered a revenue loss of around Rs 600 crore due to the workers unrest. The 13-day strike ended on Friday night and production was restored at the Manesar plant today, said sources.

Meanwhile, Maruti has set up a committee for disciplinary action against 11 workers who were sacked lately but were taken back by Maruti. The current waiting period could be more as Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) plants are expected to go for period maintenance shutdown soon. However, the date of Manesar plant periodic maintenance could be rescheduled in the wake of the production hit due to the strike. The Gurgaon plant would undergo maintenance as scheduled for eight days and would end on June 26. Meanwhile Maruti India has made clear that the situation will soon normalize as production has started at the Manesar plant.

A recent report suggests that the strike has severely impacted the delivery time and dealers are communicating that there is a minimum two months waiting period for Maruti cars, mostly diesel cars. With delay in delivery, people are thinking of other options like Hyundai and Volkswagen cars that have also established themselves as good car brands in India. In a post Manesar strike survey, even customers with all loan and other formalities ready are not able to get Maruti Swift, Maruti A-star, Maruti SX4 or Maruti Swift Dzire delivery and they are forced to explore other options.
