The lowest new vehicle demand has been observed in India in the past nine consecutive months since 2009 due to the increasing fuel price and leaping interest rates which is making the consumers having second thoughts about the car purchase. Drop in car sales is unmistakable in India, the world’s fastest growing auto market only seconded by China being the first. However, the premium hatchback leaders Maruti Swift and Hyundai i20 are not significantly affected by the prevalent dire situation and continue to be in the number one and two positions respectively in car sales in India as the reports show.

Despite the 26% drop in Maruti Swift sales figures in India, due to the 13 day employees’ strike in June, it has comfortably maintained the number one position and so has Hyundai i20 in its number two, up by one position from number three replacing Ford Figo, among the price of over Rs. 5 Lakh cars. Maruti Swift remains un-flinched in terms of its demand in spite of its newer version being anticipated to be out in the next month. It has managed quite respectable sales of 9,500 units and Hyundai is not very far behind with its impressive sales of more than 7,100 units.

The sales figures of the rest of the current hatchbacks tell an entirely different story while Ford Figo has shown monthly sales of 5,700 units until last month, a steady downhill of sales has been recorded in the past six months with initial sales of 8,600 plus in the month of January. The sales of others being Volkswagen Polo which dropped by 23% has shown mere 2,700 unit sales, Skoda Fabia and Fiat Punto has recorded a drop of 6% and 11% respectively, while Micra gained by 3% in terms of sales in the month of June.

The sales figures of July may however change the story with Toyota Liva numbers to show up by the end of this month which sounds promising with over 3000 bookings during the first week of launch. Toyota Etios Liva was launched only on 27th of June this year and has received an overwhelming response from the Indian market due to its strong value –for-money proposition. With Toyota Liva on the chart, the sales figures is likely to look up not to mention the upcoming latest Maruti Swift version launch in the next month; we can for sure keep our fingers crossed.
