World premiere - 2017 Detroit Auto Show; European launch - April 2017; US launch - August 2017

With 2017 just around the corner, Mercedes-Benz is gearing up for a flurry of launches, among which will be a special edition of the bewitching S-Class Coupe. Christened as the “Night Edition”, it will first make its way to the European market in April 2017, followed by the US launch in August 2017. This two-door coupe will be available in three avatars - the S 400 4MATIC, S 500 and the S 500 4MATIC and will be available to order from January 9, 2017. It’s slated for a world debut at the North American International Auto Show, which will be held in Detroit from January 8-22, 2017.

So, what’s special about the “Night Edition”? Well the name gives out one major clue, that it will feature most of the stuff in black colour. It gets a glossy black finish on its distinctive radiator grille with a single louvre, and on outside mirror housings and the inserts in the side sill panels. Apart from that, the “Night Edition” gets black 20-inch AMG multi-spoke, light-alloy wheels, which feature a high-sheen rim flange. While the front and rear aprons with AMG bodystyling come as standard, the car also features “Night Edition” badges on the front wings and the illuminated door sills. For the body, the selenite grey magno, which is essentially a matt paint finish with high-quality special-effect pigments, is available as an option.

Step inside and there are more design cues to remind you that you are infact inside a special edition Mercedes-Benz. It features an engraved “Night Edition” name on the AMG steering wheel wrapped in nappa leather. Customers are spoilt for choices as the upholstery can be chosen in leather, nappa leather or AMG nappa leather. The aura of the cabin can be further customised in black/black or optionally crystal grey/black, saddle brown/black or Bengal red/black, along with high-gloss poplar wood trim in a black hue.

Now to the engines. The S 400 4MATIC is powered by the 3.0-litre, V6 engine which puts out 367PS of power and 500Nm of torque. The other two variants - S 500 and S 500 4MATIC, are powered by the same engine. It is a 4.7-litre V8, which is tuned to pump out 455PS of power and 700Nm of torque. The only difference is the all-wheel drive system which is available in both the 4MATIC variants.

Although Mercedes-Benz hasn’t shared any details of its launch in India, we expect it to make here towards the end of next year.
