Next-Gen 2016 Toyota Innova and Fortuner will Get Locally Produced Diesel Engines!

Toyota will soon start trial productions at its new engine manufacturing unit, the commercial operation will start by early-2016; Localization levels will bump to 80 percent!

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) will soon start trial production of diesel engines at their new production facility at the outskirts of Bengaluru, near Jigani. A report in Business Standard states the same. The commercial production of the engines will start by early 2016. And are most likely the new GD series engines that Toyota recently revealed at the 2015 36th International Vienna Motor Symposium in Austria. Moreover, the new production unit will have an annual capacity of 100,000 units and is constructed at an investment of nearly INR 800 crore.

Update: After the success of the popular MPV Innova, Toyota has unveiled the next-gen Innova dubbed as Innova Crysta. The vehicle has already been launched in Indonesia and will come as a refreshing change in the Indian market after the decade long run of the original one. The new gen Innova Crysta comes with a lot of cosmetic changes including a large hexagonal front grille, projector head-lights with LED running lamps and more premium interiors inside. Currently at their manufacturing facility Toyota India only has a petrol production unit while the diesel engines are imported into India from the home country Japan. T S Jaishankar, Deputy Managing Director, Commercial, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said, “The plant (new diesel manufacturing unit) will cater to engine requirements of the Innova and Fortuner models. Currently, we are importing diesel engines for these models from our plant in Japan,” reports Business Standard.

Speaking of the new GD family of diesel engines, it will replace the current ‘KD’ series and will have two engine options - 2.8-liter (for Fortuner) and 2.4-liter (For Innova) turbocharged intercooled four-cylinder motors;  known by the codes of 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV respectively. For this new diesel engine clan, Toyota promises both the engines offer 'ESTEC' (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion) tech; expect improved efficiency. Moreover, the current five-speed manual and automatics will also be replaced by six-speeders!
