Skoda Citigo based on VW Up platform

Skoda India is planning another expansion of Skoda's model range. Just couple of weeks after Frankfurt Auto Show, Skoda has announced its new four seater car ‘Citigo’. Skoda Citigo is the Czech company's sixth model line and expected to launch in summer 2012 in UK. Citigo is based on recently unveiled Volkswagen Up and the launch coincides with the idea of Skoda’s announcement to launch a new vehicle every six months.

Volkswagen has already unveiled a five door Volkswagen Up at the Frankfurt Auto Show which can debut in India by year end or 2012. Skoda might bring the Citigo to India late in 2012 only after Volkswagen Up is established in terms of sales. However the company is tight lipped about it. The Skoda Citigo is expected to cost about Rs 5.50 lakh while a price tag of Rs 6 lakh can be attached to VW Up.

Skoda Citigo, will be available in three and five door options. The customers can choose from two 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol engines from Volkswagen delivering 59 hp and 75 hp of power output respectively. Skoda is quoting fuel efficiency figures of close to 26 kmpl. The Citigo will have a top speed of 170 km/hr. The Citigo design resembles the traditional Skoda lines and grille. The classy Skoda logo is placed on top of the grille rather than in the middle.  Skoda is also considering an all-electric version of Skoda Citigo.

Just like other cars, Skoda Citigo, emphasizing on safety, will endorse a Head-Thorax side airbag to prevent head-injuries of both the driver and the front seat passenger suring accident. Skoda Citigo is one of only two cars in the city car segment to offer the emergency braking functionality. The company has stated that Skoda Citigo will first come with a manual gearbox, while a five-speed auto transmission will be launched later on. While Skoda Citigo will be launched in the Czech Republic, it will make to most European countries in 2012.
