Tata to assemble Nano hatchback overseas

Tata Motors recently announced that it is giving a serious thought to assemble the world’s cheapest car, Tata Nano outside India too, which will include locations like Latin America and ASEAN region. Recently, Tata Nano entered Nepal with the price tag of Rs. 5 Lakh. On one hand, Tata Motors have already begun to export the completely built units also known as CBU of Tata Nano to Nepal and Sri Lanka and now it is considering the option of assembling Tata Nano overseas by the means of export of completely knocked down units.

As per the MD of Tata Motors, India operations, Mr. P M Telang, for Tata Nano there are definitely many potential markers, such as Latin America, SAARC countries and ASEAN nations. Tata Motors is surely doing its homework!

Mr. P M Telang also told that Tata Motors will soon set up some manufacturing facilities abroad for Tata Nano. Seeing what potential does Tata Nano possesses, the firm will grab the CBU route initially, which will be later followed by CKD operations. Right now, Tata Motors are mulling many countries for completely knocked down units for the small car, Tata Nano, but so far there hasn’t been any time line specified.

Tata Motors exported Tata Nano in April 2011 with 498 units to Sri Lanka, which was actually the very first overseas location with a price tag of Sri Lankan Rupees 9.25. Followed by this, Tata Motors then launched Tata Nano in Nepal in late June 2011 for Nepal Rupees 7.98 Lakh. In April, there were speculations that Tata Motors in its final stages to decide, which country is the best to start up their production plant for Tata Nano. The sites included Latin America, Africa or may be Southeast Asia. Tata Nano is currently giving a very tough fight to hatchback and small cars in the country, which include Maruti Alto, Maruti 800 and so on.
