Tata to take on BMW with a hybrid supercar and an entry-level sedan

Mumbai-based automaker Tata Motors is well known for its takeover of the British luxury brand Jaguar in 2008 from Ford. Now, the Jaguar of 76 year old history has plans to take upon the BMW with its brand new hybrid super car and an entry level sedan to challenge the BMW 3-series. The two models in the pipe-line are going to be a part of around $2.5 billion investment annually made by Jaguar Land Rover for the next five years, the other part of which goes to the 40 new vehicles or revised versions including the Range Rover Evoque, which is to be presented in the Liverpool today. The Land Rover has high plans for Range Rover Evoque, while Jaguar eyes to recheck its product offering to ramp-up its sales. Apparently, the Jaguar’s sales are believed to have dropped by 27% by the Q1 of this year.

The Jaguar sales are believed to be hit due to its insignificant presence in the world’s biggest emerging car market, China, while BMW, Audi and Mercedes drove the market, with their factories set up in China. Ahvin Chotai of Intelligence Automotive India reveals that the Tata Motors is centred on the JLR unit, though the Tata Motors and the Jaguar Land Rover have high plans for future, the challenge is to keep it going by exploring along the new product segments. The Tata Nano sales are believed to have been suffered by atleast 48 % during the past two months due to the increase in the loan interest rates.

The CEO and a former BMW and General Motors Co. executive, Mr Car Peter Forster has reportedly informed that the Jaguar Land Rover accounts for over  a half of the profit by the Tata Motors and JLR venture. The Tata Motor’s new entry-level sedan, Jaguar C-X75 is speculated to be limited to 250 vehicles, priced under $52, 500. They are believed to be available in XF and XJ sedans and XK sport-car. This new Jaguar entrant will challenge the three ace players of luxury car brands BMW 3-series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C Class.
