Toyota Motor Corporation has topped the global car sales last month and outsold Volkswagen AG for the fifth consecutive month. Year-to-date, the Japanese carmaker is nearly 2,00,000 units ahead of the dieselgate-hit German rival and is right on track to remain the world's top-selling carmaker.
Toyota has reported total vehicle sales of 9.21 million in the January-November period, more than the 9.10 million cars retailed by Volkswagen during the very same period. While US-headquartered General Motors is most likely to finish the year as number 3.
Sales of the German carmaker fell by 2.2 percent year-on-year in November, following a decline since October, the first full month after Europe's biggest automaker admitted to malpractice, in terms of the emission norms and said that about 11 million of their diesel cars worldwide were fitted with the ‘defeat device.’
Volkswagen Group India, with regard to this, has recalled approximately 3,23,700 cars fitted with 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre, 1.6-litre, and 2.0-litre EA 189 diesel engines that were manufactured and sold between 2008 and 2015. The recall is believed to affect 1,98,500 units of Volkswagen brand cars alone, while Skoda and Audi will recall 88,700 and 36,500 vehicles fitted with the EA 189 diesel engine, respectively. The EA 189, was found to emit nitrogen oxide up to 40 times above the permissible limit.
