With two victories and a total of four podium places at the race weekend at Brands Hatch Volkswagen secured the champion’s title in the Formula 3 Euro Series early. At the UK round the drivers powered by Volkswagen” impressively dominated their rivals with Mercedes engines. Edoardo Mortara (Italy), Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium) and Marco Wittmann (Germany) clinched a triumphant one-two-three result in the first race on Saturday for the Volkswagen partner team Signature. On Sunday the Portuguese António Félix da Costa from the Motopark Academy team crossed the finish line in first place for the third time in a row at a Sunday race of the Formula 3 Euro Series. After a tremendous start in Saturday’s race Mortara shot forwards to the front of the field after having started from third place and would not relinquish the lead again up to crossing the finish line. On Sunday the race was less fortunate for the Italian: shortly after the start he had an unfortunate collision with his team colleague Laurens Vanthoor in the notorious Paddock Hill Bend and retired. Instead, António Félix da Costa delivered a convincing, flawless start-finish victory. For the leader in the rookie standings this marked as much as the third consecutive Sunday exploit following his wins at the Nürburgring and at Zandvoort.
Despite his retirement, 23-year-old Edoardo Mortata continues to enjoy a commanding overall lead and is clearly the favourite for the champions title. With a score of 87 points he has a 24-point lead over his Signature team colleague Marco Wittmann, who after taking fifth place on Sunday remains Mortara’s only rival in the contest for the title win. Consequently, two race weekends before the end of the season it is clear that the new champion will definitely be a driver of the Volkswagen Signature team. The Formula 3 Euro Series race weekend at Brands Hatch was very successful for Volkswagen, its teams and drivers. We saw a tremendous one-two-three win yesterday and today celebrated Volkswagen Formula 3 win number 48 out of 57 possible victories this year. This means we’ve won the third Formula 3 Championship early this year. The collision between Mortara and Vanthoor was a completely normal racing accident in my book. A driver who overtakes on the outside always takes a certain risk. With his victory on Saturday Edoardo Mortara continued to extend his lead of the standings and still has perfect chances of winning the title, said Kris Nissen, Volkswagen Motorsport Director.
