Volkswagen on Friday released a statement that it will recall 3,877 Vento cars with a 1.5-litre diesel engine and a manual gearbox. The sales of the model have been put on hold with immediate effect as well. This has been done because of inconsistent Carbon Monoxide (CO) emissions by these cars. These emissions were found to surpass the threshold limits of the Indian norms in the Conformity of Production (COP) tests done by the ARAI.
Volkswagen has claimed that this issue “is not connected to the global NOx emissions topic”. It also stated that it only affects the Vento with the 1.5-litre diesel, that has a manual gearbox and that the remaining Volkswagen cars adhere to the norms set by the Indian automotive governing body. These other models will continue to be manufactured and sold in India
The statement read, “Volkswagen India is analysing the issue and will propose technical measures to ARAI to solve this inconsistency at the earliest. Once approved and confirmed by the competent authorities, Volkswagen India will implement the measures and resume the production and sales of the relevant vehicle. The same technical measures will also be implemented in the impacted vehicles that are already with customers.”
Volkswagen has a brand new car coming up as well, which has been designed keeping the Indian consumer’s preferences in mind. It is christened the Ameo, and will be the German automaker’s first sub-four metre sedan. It is based on the Polo hatchback and features the Polo’s 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.5-litre diesel engine. These engines have performed well in the Indian auto space and are known for their smooth performance and prolonged life. Technical specifications state that the 1.2-litre petrol produces 74bhp of power with 110Nm of torque, and the 1.5-litre produces 89bhp with 230Nm torque.
