India is recently being recognised as the most emerging and competitive car market. Volkswagen group had recently launched its premium and much-hyped hatchback Volkswagen Polo. Although the car is sure to give strong competition to its contemporaries in the segment of hatchbacks like Maruti Swift, Skoda fabia etc. but the group still needs to cater to the entry level compact car segment such as Maruti Alto, Hyundai Santro, Maruti Wagon R, Chevrolet Beat and Ford Figo.
Keeping the rising demand in this segment in mind the Volkswagen Group is planning to launch an entry level compact car called Volkswagen Up. This speculated car launch is certainly an intelligent move by the automaker considering the Indian auto market and the growing trends in the automobile industry.
Volkswagen Group's CEO and chairman of the board. Mr. Martin Winterkorn said that the group would soon launch Volkswagen Up for the emerging and upcoming markets like India, Russia and China way back in 2007 during the Frankfurt Auto show.
In order to manufacture the car, the Volkswagen plants are getting ready with an expected launch date of early 2011. Although the exact price range, specifications and features have not been disclosed by the company officials, but the car is expected to be shelved in the price range of Rs. 3.30 lakh. The car would be manufactured in India at the Maharashtra plant of Volkswagen. To keep the production cost-efficient 60 percent of the content would be localised.
