Volkswagen Up! and Skoda Citigo launch deferred for three years

Skoda Citigo and Volkswagen Up! were revealed at the 2011 Franfurt Motor show and since then there has been speculations about their release in the world’s most thriving and flourishing car market, the Indian car market. Both these hatchbacks were not shown at the 11th Auto Expo in New Delhi, but Volkswagen Up! was certainly seen on a flatbed truck in India during the Auto Expo 2012. However, when enquired regarding the launch of Up! from Volkswagen, the company denied the rumors and said that so far there are no plans to launch Volkswagen Up! in India.

At that point of time, Volkswagen India had issues in chopping down the costs to make VW Up! viable for the Indian car market. Back then, it was being assumed that Volkswagen will bring in Up! in India by 2013. But now, both Skoda Citigo and Volkswagen Up! might be delayed as VW is not in a mood to launch any of these hatchbacks in the country for the time being.

Recently, a VW India executive mentioned that a toned down version of Skoda Citigo and Volkswagen Up! will not be good  for the brand image in India. At present, VW is considered to be one of the most top-class German car brand present in the Indian car market. Volkswagen cars do carry an up market air and also come with a hefty price tag. But as far as these two hatchbacks are concerned, they might not arrive in India anytime soon or lets just say at least for next three years.
