VW globally admitted that they have cheated emission norms with a defeat software in the doomed EA189 family of diesel engines; cars under the scanner in India are Vento, Jetta and Audi A4. However, Skoda is not mentioned here despite using similar engines.

The government of India has issued a notice to the Indian subsidiary of the Volkswagen - Volkswagen Group India Pvt Ltd regarding emission violations. ARAI - Automotive Research Association of India, which runs under Heavy Industries Ministry, has asked VW India for an explanation on the variation of emission levels when tested in the laboratory and on-road. For the uninitiated, on a similar line, VW has been accused, later they accepted of cheating with 11 million diesel engines worldwide courtesy to a software that can alter emission levels of the vehicle when tested in laboratories, while it can produce as much as 40 percent more emission in real world conditions.

The diesel scam by the German automaker is evolving a new story almost every day since the first news broke out from the US and is commonly known as DIESELGATE scandal. Not surprisingly, it is touted as one of the biggest scandals in the history of automobiles!

According to the report, ARAI has given a two-week notice to the automaker to respond to the accusations. “Different vehicles have different range, but it is significant enough to call for an explanation. We have issued the notice and given them two-three weeks to respond and explain the reason behind the variation. After that, we will decide on the course of action," Ambuj Sharma, additional secretary at the heavy industries ministry told ET Auto. Moreover, we can expect similar issues with the Audi A6, Skoda Octavia and Superb as they use same engines.
