BMW has announced that its latest 3-cylinder engine (now fitted in the new Mini) will be made available in the 2 Series Coupe. Apart from the engine, the company has also announced several new features for the 2 Series Coupe that include four-wheel drive system and new variants with wide range of equipment options. These additions will be made available from March 2015. The BMW 218i Coupe will be the one to get the 3-cylinder engine while the four-wheel drive system BMW xDrive will be available for the BMW 220d Coupe. The 2 Series Coupe will also sport new variants in the form of Advantage, Luxury Line, Sport Line and M Sport.
Coming back to the 3-cylinder engine, it’s a 1.5-litre engine with BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology to make a maximum power output of 136 hp and a maximum torque of 220 Nm at 1,250 rpm. The engine is conventionally positioned lengthwise under the bonnet and the car comes with a well-balanced load distribution of almost 50:50 between the front and rear axle. The BMW 218i Coupe comes fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard while a 8-speed Steptronic transmission comes as an option. The car can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 8.8 seconds (automatic: 8.9 seconds) on to a top speed is 212 km/h.
The new BMW xDrive system will be available with the BMW 220d Coupe. The system will be available for this model as an alternative to rear-wheel drive and the four-wheel drive technology ensures not only optimised traction and vehicle stability in all road and weather conditions, but also increased dynamics when taking bends at higher speeds and optimal acceleration. The 2-litre four-cylinder diesel power unit features BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and makes 190 hp of maximum power. The four-wheel drive model can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.
