Baleno has been praised for its sophisticated aesthetics, youthful interiors and meeting global standards of quality, but the premium hatchback’s power-plants couldn’t pull its own weight. The diesel mill was criticized because the company chose to incorporate the relatively underpowered 75PS unit in lieu of the 90PS motor (Maruti is working on resolving this). Now as it turns out, Maruti might also bring-in the highly coveted 1-liter BoosterJet unit, which is capable of producing 110bhp of power and a peak torque of 170Nm.
The BoosterJet motor is a compact 998cc 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that features direct injection. The enhanced power coupled with Baleno’s lightweight construction (which is 100kgs lighter than the company’s Swift Hatchback) will improve the car’s power-to-weight ratio to a point, where one can speculate that it will be able to hold its own against the best of hot-hatches in India. Maruti might launch this souped-up petrol variant this year, as the production-spec prototypes are already out on road-tests in the southern parts of the country. As India is Baleno’s only manufacturing base, there is also a possibility that the BoosterJet units are being tested and produced exclusively for export purposes.
If this variant of the car is launched in India, it might come with a new black colour scheme and a set of redesigned 16 inch radial alloy wheels. So this possibility alone is enough to kick-start the New Year on a happy note.
