Mercedes-Benz to launch GLA entry level SUV in India

The utility vehicle segment in growing at a fast pace, and the craze for Sports utility vehicles are rising in India. Keeping it in mind, Mercedes-Benz is also planning to launch an entry level SUV for Indian buyers. The new vehicle will compete against the likes of BMW X1, Audi Q3 and the upcoming Volvo V40 Cross Country.

At the launch of the Mercedes-Benz first ever dealership (Silver Arrows) in Noida, Eberhard H. Kern, managing director and chief executive of Mercedes-Benz India, said that recently unveiled GLA (entry level SUV) concept could make its debut in the Indian auto market. "The GLA concept which was revealed at the Shanghai auto show recently, can come to India to compete in this (entry-level) segment," Kern told IANS, adding that it could be priced at around Rs.25 lakh.

The premium entry level SUV segment was first initiated by the BMW in 2010, when it launched X1 SUV in India. Audi India too launched the Q3 SUV in mid-2012, which is also doing great business. Both vehicles are priced around Rs. 27-33 lakh.

While speaking on the soon to be launched premium hatchback, the A-Class, Kern said that the vehicle is specially designed to target the young professionals. "The youth as well as the women in India today are independent and are making decisions on their own. The A Class will surely satisfy their needs," said Kern.
