Renault’s Dacia brand has been producing several low cost products like the Logan, Duster and the Lodgy. Gerard Detorubet has been the mastermind behind these products, which built under the Dacia badge in Romania and Morocco. Now, Renault has handed Gerard the charge to build a affordable vehicle for the A+ segment, to compete with the likes of Alto 800 and Eon.
Renault had a plan to build a low cost vehicle with Bajaj to compete against the Nano, but last year the company decided to pull back as the sales of the Nano weren’t that high. Now, the company is preparing to get A+ hatchback to enter the mass volume segment. Gerard has done well and the Logan, Duster and Lodgy are doing well across the globe.
This vehicle will also help Renault to enter into other developing markets, making the research and development worth a bigger picture. Gerard has already moved to Chennai this year, to set up a team and the work on the new car has already began. We can expect Nissan to also buy out this model and sell the rebadged version in India later on. Nissan is anyway working on the Datsun brand’s return to life, starting with the developing markets. As per an update, the Datsuns will be built on Russia’s Lada platform.
