The much hyped SUV from Tata Motors, Tata Safari Merlin is spotted once again in Pune. From what we see, the exteriors of the car appear a lot more different from the Tata Safari we usually see. Right from the headlamps, the grille and overall presence share no resemblance with Tata Safari, though the basic structuring remains to be the same. The headlamps look different with slanting look. The spare wheel which is usually carried in the rear end of the car is now placed under the car to give a spruced up look. A few components from the Tata Aria have also made into the upcoming new SUV. The bets are high that the Merlin SUV might be showcased at the 2012 Auto Expo to be held in January.

The Tata Merlin price and the other details can be confirmed only after the launch. Tata Safari Merlin, basically the new Generation Tata Safari is expected to carry a 2.2 L DICOR engine well mated with a G76 MKII gearbox to produce some impressive peak power and torque figures, much improved from  the outgoing model. Tata Motors might see a turn around in sales especially with the Tata Merlin launch lined-up for next year closely following the 2012 Tata Nano launched last month. The revamped small car has made an electrifying entry in the segment at 6,401 unit sales. This is a huge contrast from the same month last year, when Tata Nano sales suffered drastically selling just 509 units. Tata Motors has done particularly well in the month of November with substantial increase in sales of 44% from the corresponding time last year.

Looks are all right but what remains to be seen is whether the reliability factor has been taken care of. Engine failure within 15-20000 kms is not unknown in Safari. Hope the Merlin will prove to be an improvement.
