Tata Tigor

Update 29/3/2017Tata Tigor Launched at Rs 4.70 Lakh

Tata has yet another blockbuster up its sleeve – the Tigor, which will be launched in the coming months. At the 2016 Indian Auto Expo, Tata had showcased not one but three new products simultaneously. And post the upcoming launch of the Tigor (also known by its project name, the Kite 5), all the three vehicles, including the Tiago and the Hexa, will be present in the market.

Tata recently announced the name of this Tiago-based offering, which will be the spiritual successor to the country’s first sub-4m sedan, the Indigo CS. The Tigor will sit below the Zest in Tata’s line-up, and will essentially compete with the upcoming Chevrolet Beat Essentia. Despite being based on the Tiago and sharing most of its components with the same, it is relatively upmarket, courtesy the additional goodies. Collating the info from the Kite 5’s Auto Expo reveal and what we already know about the Tiago, here’s a look into the specifications of Tata Tigor

Design

With respect to Tigor images, The car looks no different from the rest of the offerings in the sub-4m sedan space, which are carbon copies of their respective hatch counterparts except for the rear profile. That said, the Tigor aims to be more upmarket than the Tiago, with its smoked projector headlamps (the production-spec Tigor is likely to feature these, just like the Kite 5 show car), LED tail lamps, diamond-cut alloy wheels, and other features.

Besides all this, the Tigor stands out with its coupe-esque roofline with integrated spoiler with width-spanning LED stop lamp. It has possibly the best-executed rear profile among all the sub-4m sedans. Interestingly, Tata is touting that the Tigor features a ‘Styleback’ design, which perhaps is its own interpretation of the term fastback (made popular by the Ford Mustang).

Interior and features

The interior of the Tigor will be identical to the Tiago’s, including the overall theme (black-and-grey layout with gloss black highlights) and body-coloured side AC vents. However, the Tigor will offer additional goodies over the Tiago to justify its relatively premium pricing over the latter.

To start with, the Tigor will be equipped with a Harman-powered five-inch touch-based infotainment system, which will also double up as a reverse parking camera screen. The Tiago, on the other hand, comes with a non-touch–based Harman unit. It will also feature an automatic climate control unit, along with a rear armrest with cup holders, which are not offered by the Tiago. The rest of the features of the hatch will be carried over in the Tigor, such as the eight-speaker system, driving modes, and others.

Mechanicals

With the the Tiago, Tata debuted its brand-new three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, and both the engines will power the upcoming Tigor as well. The petrol is a 1.2-litre Revotron motor which puts out 85PS of max power and 114Nm of peak torque, while the diesel is a 1.05-litre Revotorq motor producing 70PS of max power and 140Nm of peak torque. Both the engines are mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Since Tata is likely to introduce an AMT (automated manual transmission) variant of the Tiago soon, the Tigor is also likely to offer the same.

Price

Taking into account the cut-throat pricing of the Tiago, it is expected that Tata will price the Tigor aggressively since both the cars are essentially the same. We expect the home-grown automaker to price the Tigor in the vicinity of Rs 4-4.5 lakh.
