The base price might, however, undercut the Jeep Compass by some margin
Update: The Tata Harrier has been launched in India and is priced between Rs 12.69 lakh and Rs 16.25 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). Read the launch story to find out more.
Tata is all set to launch the Harrier SUV by early 2019, possibly January. Bookings of the upcoming SUV are already underway for a token amount of Rs 30,000. While we will have to wait another few months to see the car in the flesh and know its prices, Tata’s official Twitter handle wants us to expect the top-spec Harrier to cost around Rs 21 lakh on-road.
Tweeting to Tata Motors, a user (@shekhu29) recently asked for the Harrier’s pricing. To which Tata Motors replied, “The on-road price of the Tata Harrier is expected to be between Rs. 16 lakhs (base model) to Rs. 21 lakhs (top-end variant). The cost will include registration charges, insurance, etc.”
Now, let's compare the tentative prices of the Harrier with its arch-rival, the Compass. Since Tata has not yet revealed whether the Harrier would get a petrol engine or not, we’re assuming it will be a diesel-only product for now. Tata has already confirmed that the Harrier would get a 2.0-litre diesel engine.
Now let’s compare the Harrier’s expected on-road prices with those of the diesel Compass.
Tata Harrier on-road price (expected in Delhi) |
Jeep Compass on-road price (Delhi) |
Difference |
Base spec Rs 16 Lakh (On-road) |
Sport (base-spec) Rs 19.83 lakh (on-road Delhi) |
Rs 3.83 lakh (Compass is more expensive) |
Top-spec Rs 21 Lakh (On-road) |
Limited Plus (4x2) Rs 25.14 Lakh (On-road) |
Rs 4.14 lakh (Compass is more expensive) |
Going by the expected on-road prices, the Harrier undercuts the Compass by a huge margin of Rs 3.83 lakh and 4.14 lakh in the base and top variant, respectively. In fact, at these prices, lower variants of the Harrier will even be comparable to mid-spec variants of the Hyundai Creta, which sits one segment below the Harrier.
Tata Harrier on-road price (expected in Delhi) |
Hyundai Creta on-road price (Delhi) |
Difference |
Base spec Rs 16 Lakh (On-road) |
1.6 SX diesel Rs 15.87 Lakh (on-road) |
Rs 13,000 (Harrier is more expensive) |
Top-spec Rs 21 Lakh (On-road) |
1.6 SX(O) diesel (top-spec) Rs 17.92 Lakh (on road) |
Rs 3 lakh (Harrier is more expensive) |
So, if Tata prices the Harrier anywhere close to the expected prices, it will pose a threat to both the Compass and the Creta, which are among the best-selling SUVs in their respective segments.
