Toyota yet again tops the global sales chart

Japanese auto-maker Toyota Motor Corp has managed to keep its top position of world's best-selling car manufacturer yet again, beating close rivals Volkswagen AG and General Motors Co. Globally, Toyota retailed a total of 2.58 million units- a rise of 6.3% compared to last year. Helping the number game is the sedan Toyota Corolla which received the tag of world's best selling vehicle of 2013 with a global sales of 10,98,524 units.
In the same time frame, American auto-maker General Motors witnessed a growth of 2%, as they sold 2.42 million vehicles across the continents while the German carmaker Volkswagen AG came third after selling 2.40 million vehicles. Furthermore, VW registered a growth of 5.8%.
In the last fiscal year, Toyota for the first time touched the magical figure of 10 million units as they sold 10.13 million vehicles worldwide, an appraisal of 4.5% compared to 2012-13 fy. Toyota was also the best-selling carmaker from the year 2008 to 2010, but in 2011 it slipped to the third position. However, the company regained its top position in the next year 2012.
In India, Toyota manufactures its products in collaboration with Kirloskar Motors. In the month of March, the automaker sold a total of 9,160 units compared to 21,143 units in March, 2013. Recently, the company also faced some serious issues like strikes and lock-outs at its production units which also affected its overall production. The company in order to expand its model line-up is all set to launch Toyota Etios Cross on 7th May while the next gen Corolla Altis is also expected to make way to Indian shores in next few months. The booking of both the cars has already began.
