2014 Nissan Sunny takes on rivals City, Verna & New Fiesta

The latest update in the heated C-segment – the facelifted 2014 Nissan Sunny makes its entry. The sedan is launched at a price tag of Rs 6.99 lakh for the base petrol, while the diesel starts at Rs 7.99 lakh (All Ex-Showroom New Delhi). Earlier, the company showcased the new Sunny at the 2014 Auto Expo in February. The facelift has more to do with the style quotient and is kept unaltered mechanically. A few days before, Ford introduced the 2014 Fiesta so we pitted the new Sunny against the Fiesta and the segment top sellers Honda City and Hyundai Verna.
Exteriors
Nissan Sunny

The front facade of Sunny is completely revised with an elongated chrome grille and new set of boomerang shaped headlamp cluster. The front bumper is also heavily altered to offer a fresh face to this 10th generation of Sunny.

Side and the rear profile is the area which depicts that this new car is based on the outgoing version, although the car gets new set of alloys.

The rear profile witnesses subtle changes, the boot-lid gets a chrome appliqué while the bumper is now in dual-toned shade.
Honda City

The all-new City resembles nothing like the previous model, the 2014 model looks more premium, wider and longer, featuring Honda 'EXCITNG H!!!' design philosophy.

At the front, the car gets wing shaped chromed grille flanked around wrap-around headlamps.
- The side profile gets new set of alloys and a segment-first shark-fin antenna. The rear profile is also completely altered, looks dapper with elongated tail-lamps.
Hyundai Verna

Hyundai recently upgraded the Verna, the 2014 model gets first-in-the-segment projector headlamps with LED positioning lights.

Apart from this, car remained same in the recent update, continuing the Hyundai fluidic design scheme.

Verna also offers machined diamond-cut alloys which is also a segment-first.
Ford Fiesta

The new Fiesta features Ford's second iteration of the Kinetic design – Kinetic 2.0, courtesy to this the sedan gets a fresh new face with a huge Aston Martin-esque chrome grille along with new headlamp cluster and bumper.

The side profile is kept same but it gets new set of twin 5-spoke alloys riding on 15-inch radial.

The rear profile in the updated Fiesta gets elongated compared to outgoing version with new taillamps and bumper tweaks.

Nissan Sunny

The dash layout remains same but it offers new central console in Piano Black finish.

The sedan also offers a 5.1-inch infotainment system offering USB, Aux-in, Bluetooth, CD which double up as a reverse parking camera screen.

The 2014 Sunny features updated steering wheel borrowed from the Terrano.

The vehicle continues to offer rear AC blowers, leather upholstery, automatic climate control, engine start-stop, smart key-less entry.

The vehicle features standard driver-side airbag with ABS and EBD with BA (Brake assist). The co-passenger's airbag comes in top variants, while side airbags are optional.
Honda City

The 2014 City offers a fresh new dash layout with a 5-inch infotainment system with connectivity option ranging from USB, Aux-in, FM, CD and Bluetooth phone connectivity.

Other goodies on board include touch-sensitive automatic climate control, push button engine start-stop, sunroof, cruise control, reverse parking camera, leather upholstery, smart key-less entry, rear AC vents.

City offers driver airbags, ABS with EBD as standard, while top variants comes with dual-SRS airbags.
Hyundai Verna

Verna sports a premium looking interiors featuring black and beige treatment with wooden inserts and silver highlights.

On feature list, Verna offers automatic climate control with air purification, engine start-stop, smart key-less entry, audio unit with USB, Aux-in, Bluetooth phone integration and iPod connectivity, leather upholstery.

Verna offers no standard safety features, while the top variants features all-around disc braking, 6-airbags, ABS with EBD.
Ford Fiesta

The all-new Fiesta carry forwarded the interiors from the outgoing version but features a revised central console in glossy Piano Black finish.

The vehicle gets an 'ice blue' back-lit illumination compared to red in the previous model.

The new Fiesta features updated Ford's SYNC powered audio unit, this time the car features segment-first Ford's AppLink connectivity, an App on your smartphone that controls various fruitions of your smartphone through SYNC voice commands.

Fiesta also offers cruise control, automatic headlights and wipers, ambient lighting, engine push button start-stop, automatic air condition and rear park sensors.
Engine
Nissan Sunny
Petrol – The petrol Sunny is powered by a 1.5 liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine. The motor churns out 98bhp the 5-speed manual, while the automatic CVT musters 100bhp on tap, with a max torque of 134Nm. Nissan claims that the CVT returns over 17km/l of fuel efficiency.
Diesel – The famous 1.5 liter K9K is doing duty in the diesel Sunny, the turbo charged inter-cooled motor produces 85bhp and 200Nm of peak torque. The engine delivers 22.7km/l, slight increment compared to previous version.
Honda City
Petrol – The 1.5 i-VTEC in the new city gathers 117bhp and 145Nm of max torque, the engines comes mated either to a 5 speed manual transmission or CVT AT. The petrol City delivers 18kmpl on CVT and 17+ in MT.
Diesel – The 1.5 liter i-DTEC diesel churns out 98bhp and 200Nm of max torque mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The engine delivers a segment-leading mileage of 26km/l.
Hyundai Verna
Petrol - Verna offers two petrol option, the 1.4 liter VTVT produces 105.5bhp and the sportier 1.6 liter produces 121.3bhp.
Diesel – Like the petrol, Verna diesel also offers two engine options, the 1.4 liter i20 borrowed CRDI unit churns out 88.7bhp, while the zippier 1.6 liter CRDI produces 126.2bhp.
Ford Fiesta
Diesel – Fiesta only comes in diesel, 1.5 liter turbo charged inter-cooled diesel gathers 90bhp on tag with a max torque of 205Nm. Fiesta comes second in this list with 25.1km/l certified tag, only second to City's 26.

Nissan Sunny
Petrol – The prices starts from 6.99 lakh for the base while the top variant comes at 8.91 lakh
Diesel – The base diesel starts at 7.99 lakh while the top variant comes at 9.80 lakh.
Honda City
Petrol – The petrol city starts at 7.19 lakh while the top costs 10.96 lakh.
Diesel – The diesel starts at 8.37 lakh while the top diesel costs 11.05 lakh.
Hyundai Verna
Petrol - The base 1.4 petrol Verna costs 7.17 lakh, while the top 1.6 petrol costs 9.51 lakh.
Diesel - The base 1.4 diesel Verna costs 8.35 lakh, while the top 1.6 diesel costs 11.51 lakh.
Ford Fiesta
Diesel – The base costs 7.69 lakh while the top comes at 9.92 lakh.
